Aging Skin:

As we age we lose our youthful features of our skin, older skin produces less collagen and elastin ( after the age of 20 we lose the ability to produce collagen by %1 annually) so our skin becomes thinner and less flexible/ more lax and starts folding AKA wrinkles.

Some of the factors are “Intrinsic” like the ones we mentioned above and they are mostly inevitable, we only can slow them. But some of the causes are “Extrinsic” and we can prevent them; Smoking, exposure to Sun and UV light, and pollution are just some examples.

What to do to “Prevent”?

The main preventable cause of damage is the Sunlight and its UV, if I am supposed to give you just one skin care product for the rest of your life that would be a Sunscreen. People need to start using sunscreen at very young age, probably before they turn into their 20s to get the maximal benefits of it.

Also using  prescription grade Tretinoin would slow down collagen breakdown and increases its production, keeping the skin more flexible and youthful, I recommend to start using it at around the age of 20 as well.

Don’t forget the extrinsic factors like smoking cessation and avoiding too much alcohol as it causes skin dehydration, worsening the ageing process.

What to do to “Correct”?

If the damage is already done there are some modalities we can use to reverse the damage, it’s never late to use Tretinoins and Sunscreen as they start the repair process at any age. Also we can use chemical peels (moderate depth) to erase some of the damage and imperfections and “resurface” the skin with a newer one and repair the damaged collagen.

If the damage is more profound, we can use Lasers to resurface the skin and speed up the collagen production and tighten the skin to some point. We also can use Fillers to fill the areas which have lost the natural fat pad’s volume, causing the skin to sag and wrinkle.

What is the role of Botox© in this middle?

Neuromodulators like Botox© and Jeuveau© loosen the muscle under the skin and open up the wrinkles on top of it, giving the skin a more youthful look. They also prevent the wrinkles from getting “Etched” into the skin if they are used at an earlier age BUT:

There is a catch here, using too much Neuromodulator for a long time causes the muscle not to move at all and as a result the muscle loses its volume (Atrophy of the muscle), causing the area to shrink sue to volume loss, therefore it will look OLDER!

So if you are using Botox at an early age make sure you are not getting too much to the point of “Frozen Face” or “Poker face” as that causes you to look older at an earlier age down the road.

Here at Orchid Wellness and Medical Spa we make sure you still would have some natural movement in your face after your treatment, that gives you a more natural result and prevents you from aging faster later down the road.
