Fractional CO2 Q and A:
What is Fractional CO2 Skin Resurfacing:
Fractional CO2 laser skin resurfacing uses an Ablative Laser (CO2 laser) to make controlled thermal micro-injuries to the surface of the skin and promote the skin to heal itself and as a result increase collagen production, improve quality of the existing collagen and overall enhance the quality of the skin, improve scars, including acne scars, improve blemishes, get rid of sun spots, improve fine lines and wrinkles etc.
Who is a "good" candidate for this treatment?
Fractional CO2 potentially can treat a wide variety of skin conditions in a diverse patient population. People with darker skin and higher Fitzpatrick score are not necessarily excluded.
When appropriate power is used, this Laser can treat a wide variety of skin conditions, from mild sun spots and very superficial acne scars to deep folds and wrinkles in a significantly aged skin.
What to expect in the treatment session:
After you are checked in, we take you to the treatment room. Our physician will review your medical history and performs a physical exam of the treated area. Then we clean your face thoroughly and apply a strong topical anesthetic (numbing cream) on your face and let it stay for about 45 minutes.
Starting your treatment, we wipe off the numbing cream and start, usually from the forehead and finish on the lower face. Then we cool your skin down and apply a dressing agent, specifically chosen based on your treatment you received and send you home with post-care instructions.
In planned more aggressive treatment, when a more dramatic improvement is desired, the doctor may prescribe you with a sedative and painkiller medication right before you come in so you may need to have a “designated driver” to take you back home. Just to let you know that most of the treatments are not aggressive enough to the point of needing oral sedatives and painkillers.
recovery time and amount of downtime depends on the depth of the treatment, the more aggressive the treatment, the longer the downtime.
What will happen after the treatment:
As we discussed, the recovery time depends on the depth of the treatment and how aggressive your layers of skin is treated: in more superficial treatments your skin would be red/ pink for a day or two followed by some peeling, in more aggressive treatments you need to keep your skin moist for three to four days until the superficial barrier is re-established.
No matter how deep your treatment is, you need to know that it is very important to protect the treated area all the time with an appropriate sunscreen and prevent it from getting damaged by UV and other elements harmful to the skin. remember that the sun exposure will damage the “baby skin” you have after the treatment, your new skin needs to be protected.
Due to the corrective nature of this treatment your improvement continues for months after the treatment.
